Need some ideas for you and your book-loving beau? Here's a list to try when you find some time to spend an afternoon or evening together, reading.
Read a book together. It was one of the most romantic things I had ever seen: I was on a ferry heading towards the island of Isle Royale in Lake Superior for a back-packing trip with my sister and some friends. In one corner of the cabin, cuddled together with their gear next to them, was a couple reading a book together. The guy was reading it out loud as the girl listened, and it was enough for me to swoon. Now, Andrew has read to me 2 books (The Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith) and those days of cuddling close with our book are some of my most cherished memories. If you don't want to read out loud, read the book together and talk about it over dinner.
Make a meal inspired by a book. Currently, Andrew and I are reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and the series is chocked full of dishes and meals I would love to try someday. Thankfully, the series has a very devoted following and now there's an actual cookbook of recipes from the Outlander books. Multiple other fictional series have cookbooks for fans to read: The Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, and of course, Harry Potter fans have one or two as well. This is something I've always wanted to try, but haven't yet, so if you have the time and do so, please let me know!
Listen to an audio book together when driving in the car. I actually got Andrew into listening to audio-books when we were on a day trip down to Ohio a couple years ago. It was fun holding hands in the car, imagining the happenings of the book together while cruising down the road. And ever since, Andrew has probably listened to at least 10 audio books and is hooked for life.
Watch a movie based on a book you've both read. Put on your pjs, grab a cup of hot cocoa, and cuddle up together with a good movie on the tv.
Go out to eat and bring your books. Andrew and I do this pretty often. It makes the date more enjoyable because we are doing several of our favorite things all at once: eating, reading, and enjoying each other's company. We read different books, so if we read something interesting we'll talk about it, too.
Go to a bookstore and get lost! Extra points if you go to a local or small-town bookstore. There's something romantic in the smell of old, used books. Extra-extra points if you find a book to take home.
Visit your library. Thankfully, Andrew and I live down the road from our local library. It has a beautiful view of the River Raisin, has cozy chairs, free wifi, and tons of books to peruse. Bring a snack, a thermos of coffee/hot cocoa and you're all set.
Go on a picnic and bring your books. This is seriously one of our favorite things to do together when the weather is warm. Ride your bikes or drive to a park with a lunch packed and spend some good quality time under the sun with a favorite book.
Recommend a book to each other. When you read a book someone recommends, not only do you enjoy a new book, but you also get a glimpse at the inner workings of the person who recommended the book. You understand a little better at what fascinates them, moves them to tears, or makes them laugh. Who better to learn more of than someone you love?
If possible, visit places that inspired books you love or were the homes of famous authors you both love. Andrew and I haven't yet (intentionally) visited any famous author hometowns or famous book sites together. For some ideas of places to go, here is a comprehensive list of famous authors from every state in America.
I hope you enjoy this list, and if you try any, let me know!
